I found a copy of this book in the sale in Asda the other day and am now planning to use it to inspire an art project as part of our topic on Water and Rivers. The book tells the story of a crate of rubber ducks who are lost overboard a ship [...]

[from Junior Education, August 2006, p.18-19]
Let the children choose a country that really interests them – perhaps China or India, Spain or Brazil, USA or Egypt – and set them off on their quest for exciting items for their resource box.
Collect:
large-scale map, national flag, coins, stamps
national animal and/or flower
traditional items that highlight national identity

Team points have proved to be a great motivator for my class, with the members of the winning team receiving a small prize at the end of the week.
This term, with our focus being on geography, I named each table after a continent. The tables are roughly positioned where that continent is shown on a [...]

This art lesson was really successful. It was linked to the geography research that we’ve been doing. The children first drew the design of the flag onto card. They then used small pieces of tissue paper to create the colours. Some children used different shades of the colours for each section, which looked really effective. [...]

Here are some ideas for using weather forecasts in literacy – taken from ‘Teaching with Text: Geography’. Most of these could be done using a detailed weather page from a newspaper.
Talk about the different ways in which the information is recorded, e.g. tabular form, and the reasons for this (e.g. to minimise space, make it easier [...]

I’ve set up another blog for my class:
http://class5k.edublogs.org/
This one will be used to set tasks for them as part of their independent research. They’ve each chosen a country to research and are going to do a short presentation at the end of term. I’m hoping that the blog will encourage them to continue with their [...]

I’ve just found a website with links to various webquests. These may come in useful when I am thinking about independent research tasks for next year (more on that later!). The website includes information on how webquests link to the TASC wheel (Thinking Actively in a Social Context).
It includes a webquest about countries, in which [...]

I’m going to try to teach my class a few words in the language of each country we travel to. I’m starting next week with France, then Germany I think. Enchanted Learning has resources for French, Chinese, Dutch, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. There’s also lots of general geography and map [...]

On Thursday night, I used this site to contact a few tourist information boards, saying in the comments section that I was a teacher working on a geography project with my class. This morning (only two days later!) I received information from Sri Lanka and Korea. They’ve sent me loads of useful stuff, including maps [...]
