I’m going to spend the next few weeks working with my Year 6s on designing a theme park in maths.
It’s based on an idea found on Teaching Ideas. The Primary Teacher Resource Centre have added new sections, smartboard files and an advert activity.
The idea is quite similar to the Theme Park sim games available.
I used [...]

I’m going to add my planning and resources for this unit as I do them.
So here’s Week 1 (Chapters 1-3):
kensukes-kingdom-week-1
You’ll need a copy of the book (ideally enough for the children to have copies to refer to during their work). I managed to persuade the school to buy 30 copies of the book last year:

I haven’t posted for ages – my SATs revision was not exciting enough to be worth writing about! But with SATs now over (for a while, anyway!), I can get back to more interesting teaching.
Last week I did a great project with my class based on the idea of being stranded on a desert [...]

SAT Attack has been recommended by my head teacher as a useful revision scheme. I’ve started creating Smart Notebook files to accompany each lesson, with all the key questions and answers for children to mark their work. At the moment, I’m uploading these to the Year 6 Wikispaces site.

This video is of a Spanish lesson, but a lot of the games could be adapted to use for SATs revision.

I’m planning to use ‘winter’ as the theme for my poetry unit, which I’ve deliberately left until the last week of term, before Christmas!
These websites have poems on the theme of winter. I haven’t had a close look at them yet to check how useful they will be:

Coloured presents sparkle dreamily,
Bright stockings shimmer enticingly,
Beautiful baubles hang brightly,
Tinselled trees gleam peacefully.

This poem was very quickly written using this online poem maker. You can create a wordlist and it automatically generates poems, following the format you specify. I’m planning to cover one of the poetry units with my Year 6 class in [...]

Someone on TES posted a link to a really useful website, which I thought I’d share.
http://www.teachers-direct.co.uk/resources/quiz-busters/subjects/ks2.aspx?page=2
It has Blockbuster games which use key vocabulary for maths, science, languages, etc. You can also create your own Blockbuster games, or wordsearches which can be completed online or printed out.
